Anisotropy in high angular resolution diffusion-weighted MRI.

چکیده

The diffusion in voxels with multidirectional fibers can be quite complicated and not necessarily well characterized by the standard diffusion tensor model. High angular resolution diffusion-weighted acquisitions have recently been proposed as a method to investigate such voxels, but the reconstruction methods proposed require sophisticated estimation schemes. We present here a simple algorithm for the identification of diffusion anisotropy based upon the variance of the estimated apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) as a function of measurement direction. The rationale for this method is discussed, and results in normal human subjects acquired with a novel diffusion-weighted stimulated-echo spiral acquisition are presented which distinguish areas of anisotropy that are not apparent in the relative anisotropy maps derived from the standard diffusion tensor model. Determination of Fiber Direction in High Angular Resolution Diffusion Images using Spherical Harmonics Functions and Wiener Filter

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) MRI is a noninvasive imaging method of the cerebral tissues whose fibers directions are not evaluated correctly in the regions of the crossing fibers. For the same reason the high angular resolution diffusion images (HARDI) are used for estimation of the fiber direction in each voxel. One of the main methods to specify the direction of fibers is usage of the spher...

"Squashing peanuts and smashing pumpkins": how noise distorts diffusion-weighted MR data.

New diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) methods, including high-b, q-space, and high angular resolution MRI methods, attempt to extract information about non-Gaussian diffusion in tissue that is not provided by low-b-value (b approximately 1000 s mm(-2)) diffusion or diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging (DT-MRI). Additionally, DWI data with higher spatial resolution are being acquired to re...

Quantitative Diffusion Tensor Imaging of White Matter Microstructure in Dog Brain at 7T

The purpose of this study is to develop a noninvasive quantitative imaging scheme to assess the functional microanatomy of dog brain using high resolution diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) at 7-Tesla (T) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner. Diffusion weighted images (DWIs) along 25 diffusion-encoding directions, combined with T2 weighted images, were acquired using the standard spin-echo diff...

k-space and q-space: Combining ultra-high spatial and angular resolution in diffusion imaging using ZOOPPA at 7 T

There is ongoing debate whether using a higher spatial resolution (sampling k-space) or a higher angular resolution (sampling q-space angles) is the better way to improve diffusion MRI (dMRI) based tractography results in living humans. In both cases, the limiting factor is the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), due to the restricted acquisition time. One possible way to increase the spatial resoluti...

Collaborative patch-based super-resolution for diffusion-weighted images

In this paper, a new single image acquisition super-resolution method is proposed to increase image resolution of diffusion weighted (DW) images. Based on a nonlocal patch-based strategy, the proposed method uses a non-diffusion image (b0) to constrain the reconstruction of DW images. An extensive validation is presented with a gold standard built on averaging 10 high-resolution DW acquisitions...
